At least six people have been killed and at least 10 others are missing after a ferry sank in a lake in eastern Sri Lanka. The ferry sank off the coast of the eastern city of Kenya on Tuesday, local officials said.
Kini police spokesman Nihal Thaldua said students and teachers were being taken to a school on the other side of the Kiniya suburb around 8:30 am local time. The ferry sank while crossing the lake.
However, local villagers, police and members of the navy were able to rescue the 20 passengers on the ferry. Half of them are children. He was later taken to hospital.
Thaldua confirmed that six people, including four schoolchildren, had been killed. The ferry had about 35 passengers. The cause of the drowning is not yet known, the police official said.
Eight naval teams, including divers, are searching for the missing. However, he said that the search operation is closed like today.
