The Islamic State of Khorasan (IS) is now the Taliban’s biggest threat in Afghanistan. The group has recently carried out multiple attacks targeting the Taliban. This time the Taliban government has sent new troops to fight the extremist group in the eastern province of Nangarhar in Afghanistan.
The Washington Post quoted Taliban security officials as saying that the Taliban had sent at least 1,300 troops to Nangarhar province in the past few days to speed up operations against IS. According to reports, an average of seven to 10 IS militants are being detained and six killed each week in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province.
According to local residents and Taliban army officials in Nangarhar province, night raids have been intensified against the suspected terrorists, and hundreds of terrorists have been killed or arrested so far.
Who is ‘IS-K’?
The full name of IS-K, which attacked Kabul in Afghanistan, is the Islamic State of Khorasan. They are acting as a regional affiliate of the militant group Islamic State (IS).
In ancient times, the region comprising Afghanistan and Pakistan was called Khorasan. Currently, ISK is active in both countries. The group has been blamed for years of violence.
In particular, they attacked schoolgirls and even targeted hospitals. Now they are linked to the network of the international terrorist group IS. At the same time, it is thought that IS-K is linked to a third party, the Haqqani network.
Who are the members: Their goal is to establish an Islamic caliphate in Khorasan. Of all the jihadist groups active in Afghanistan, IS is the most extremist and violent.
IS-K was founded in January 2015, when IS declared a caliphate by occupying large parts of Iraq and Syria.
The extremist group recruits members from both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Their focus is on hardline jihadists, especially former Taliban fighters who want to see their organization play a more radical role.
