A strong earthquake has shaken Peru. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.5 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey said the quake struck 42 kilometers (25 miles) from the Peruvian city of Baransa early Sunday local time.
Initially, there were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage. The quake affected Lima, the capital of Peru.
The depth of the earthquake was 112.5 km (about 60 miles). The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said in a tweet that the quake-hit area in the Amazon rainforest was sparsely populated.
The US Tsunami Warning Department said the quake did not cause a tsunami in Peru.
